Summer Sun-Protection Essentials

Tuesday, 17 June 2014

Maxi dresses, flip-flops, & popsicles.  Summer is FINALLY here! At last, Good ol’Mister Sun has decided to come down and pay us a visit here in Canada! With 9 months of cold--- we, Canadians, CHERISH our 3 months of hot summer weather. Oh, how I envy any of you with hot weather all-year-long!

As much I love the bright summer sun & shine, it is so important to be sun protected.  Extended exposure to the sun leads to premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, dark spots, sun burns and even skin cancer. FACT: the sun IS a carcinogen. Even minutes in the sun unprotected can start doing its harm.  And NO sun protection is NOT just for the BEACH---but every day –sun, rain, clouds.

Here are my top 5 essential picks to be sun safe:

All day, every day! The SINGLE most important thing you can do for your skin is SUNSCREEN, SUNSCREEN & SUNSCREEN. This is NUMBER #1 before all your anti-aging, firming, dark-spot erasing creams and what not. In the past, I have been SO bad & lazy with suncreen—I hardly EVER used it. I really believed it was only for the beach (horrible- I know!). But I upped my game the past year with regular sunscreen use & have noticed a HUGE difference in my skin.  I kid you not! --- Acne scars lightening, hyper-pigmentation decreasing, and a more evened skin tone. None of my creams/masks/exfoliants had a real effect without this (cause the sun was just damaging it on a daily basis).

Use a sunscreen with atleast SPF 30 or more of broad spectrum protection (UVA and UVB protection).  I prefer mineral/physical sunscreens with either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the main active ingredients. As they sit on the skin reflecting harmful rays whereas chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin. (Here’s an article on chemical vs. physical sunscreens if you’re interested ).  I use Paula's Choice Resist Super-Light Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 which is a moisturizer + SPF. I've done a short review on this in my Prep and Prime Routine post--- in short I love it to bits!

I use a different sunscreen for my body--- as I’m picky with what I use on my face (some sunscreens can look shiny, greasy, have white casts, flashbacks, etc.). Apply a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to all uncovered body parts-- arms, legs, hands, neck and don't forget your feet in those flip-flops!

If your not sun-blocking the area, then be sure to cover it with clothing (long sleeves, long pants, etc.). On my current must have WANT LIST is La Roche –Posay ANTHELIOS 50 MINERAL Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid. La Roche Posay are KNOWN for their sunscreens---my brother who is SPF-fanatic SWEARS by them!

Don’t forget about your LIPS! Use a lip-balm with a SPF. I use Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm with a SPF of 20. It looks and works just as great as any other lip-balm. I use the shade/flavor Pink Punch and I LOVE it! There are plenty of lip-balms out there with a higher SPF as well.

Protects your eyes + a stylish accessory! I cannot live without sunglasses especially in the summer months. If I ever forget them while driving I will literally drive back home just to get them cause I’m so blinded otherwise.  UV rays can harm the lens, cornea & surrounding tissue of the eyes and lead to problems such as cataracts--- SCARY STUFF. Also, no sunglasses=squinting = wrinkles! So be sure to always wear UV-protection sunglasses when in the sun.  I’ve been lusting over these Classic Aviator Raybans for just about forever!

I’m pretty bad on keeping up with this one myself because I always FORGET! A wide-brimmed hat will have the most cooling effect on your head, eyes and face. I'm not feeling those summery beach straw hats... I’m much more into a sleek wide brimmed black hat like above from Topshop.  This ones Its less “beachy” or "cow-girly" and not too floppy looking. It definitely goes with more outfits and is practical for everyday.

On that note, GO OUT AND GET YOUR SUMMER ON! – but don’t skimp on the sun protection!

What are your top summer picks and sunscreen recommendations?!

The No Poo Method: My Experience

Thursday, 6 March 2014

I have used countless shampoos and conditioners my whole life! I've always been on the hunt for the "best one" for my hair but have not even come close to finding it. My natural hair is wavy, gets oily by the second day and my scalp also suffers from dryness and mild dandruff. I've tried so many different shampoos and even ones medicated for dandruff. All I got was temporary results and an even drier scalp.

A few months ago, I learned that most shampoos contain harsh chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which is an overly drying and irritating cleansing agent.. Since then, I've been on the hunt for a good  "SLS-free" minimalistic shampoo with a short ingredients list. It was only recently that I heard of the "No Poo" method while browsing online one night. Odd name but it basically means giving up completely on traditional shampoos and conditioners on the market.

Trust me, at first I thought this idea was absolutely ridiculous and a little gross to be honest.  I was really skeptical but decided to finally give it a try. The most popular and most simple "no-poo" method consists of the following:
  • Baking Soda (?! I know) (1 spoon baking soda in 1 cup of water) as a shampoo replacement
  • Apple cider vinegar (half cup ACV and half cup water) as a conditioner replacement
Week 1:  I used this method on my greasy hair that I had deep conditioned with my favourite oils. The Baking Soda + Water combo left my scalp completely clean and yes it got rid of all the greasiness. But, the rest of my hair was still very oily looking. On a plus side, my scalp/roots feels very nourished and healthy without being oily. My scalp doesn't feel itchy/dry as it usually does and I even noticed a reduction in my dandruff.

Week 2: My scalp felt so incredibly dry and itchy and the rest of my hair was so oily! I felt as it had stripped only my scalp of all its natural oils but only made the rest of my hair oily.

Week 3: By this week, I really could not go any longer with an overly dry scalp and incredibly oily hair. I read online that Baking Soda is actually not the best for your hair as it has a very high pH level in comparison to the pH of our scalp and thus can be very damaging. Instead, I used a new SLS/sulfate/paraben-free shampoo that I recently picked up called, Live Clean - Green Earth Invigorating shampoo.

Week 4: As I was searching for home-made shampoo recipes, I came across the Coconut milk + Aloe Vera Shampoo method. This left my hair feeling very soft/smooth but a bit on the oily side. It also didn't really feel like it "cleaned" my hair. I would consider this more of a hair treatment/mask than a shampoo which I will continue to use from time to time.

Currently, I am using the Live Clean - Green Earth Invigorating shampoo. This shampoo is sodium lauryl sulfate free, paraben free and 98% plant derived.  I am really liking this shampoo as it has significantly reduced the dryness of my scalp, reduced dandruff and cleanses my hair very well (even when I've oiled it).

The standard No-Poo was really a No-go for me but switching to a SLS free shampoo has worked amazingly! My "shampoo journey" still continues as I am still on the lookout for an even simpler, more natural shampoo, free of harsh chemicals and a short ingredients list.

Natural DIY Body + Lip Scrub

Friday, 21 February 2014

I thought I'd share a very simple and natural "Do it Yourself" Body scrub that I've recently been LOVING!
I love it because it exfoliates my body in such a gentle manner, its so nourishing and all you need is 2 common house hold ingredients!!

What you will need:
  • 2 teaspoons of Coconut oil (organic virgin coconut oil would be the best choice)
  • 2 teaspoons of Brown sugar
  • a mixing bowl
  • a spoon
  • may need a microwave
  • a container to store your mixture
 Method:
  • Mix the coconut oil and brown sugar together in a bowl
  • To soften the coconut oil, place the bowl in the microwave for 15-20 seconds
  • Mix it all together
  • Optional: Mix in more sugar to make it even more exfoliating or mix in more coconut oil to make it more moisturizing and smooth (your preference)

Fill an empty container with this home-made scrub and place it in the shower for easy use.

..and BAM you have made an incredibly gentle, nourishing and exfoliating body scrub. This leaves my body feeling so soft and supple, that I don't even feel the need to moisturize after showering. This also works as an amazing lip scrub to get rid of any flakes and residue and leaves your lips feeling silky smooth (and yummy).
